Our Most Androgynous DJ Set With SFMOMA

Within SFMOMA’s collection lies a selection of artworks that challenge our views on sexuality and identification. With the green light from SFMOMA’s resident staff babe Willa (previously exalted on our site,) BATM got to “DJ” for the day and put together this playlist that muses on androgyny in art– its power to lure and gracefully confuse, visually and musically.

More on the artwork that inspired our music picks here.

Alex Silva De Appel Art Centre with Allan van Hoorn "Skies over Snaefell"

Anyone whose outfit is inspired by Miss Piggy is good in my book. Here is Alex at the de Appel art centre in Amsterdam, spotted with Allard Van Hoorn’s bulbous “Skies over Snaefell” installation. Alex is a fashion designer and  stylist, and grew up  frequenting museums all her life. Who could ask for a more stylish babe with brains? (Photo by Kelly Silva)

Beth Houfek Ray Charles show Matthew Marks gallery LA by Dean Spunt

Sometimes a photo of someone is all you need to look at in order to get a feeling that they’re very likely, lots of fun. This is Beth with a Ray Charles sculpture at the Matthew Marks gallery. Beth is a New Yorker-cum-Los Angelena who studied graphic design and is currently working on a conceptual catalogue with some friends. (Photo by Dean Spunt)

Spotting a babe in rest mode proves that museums can be tiring and that perhaps more seating is necessary. The special thing about this encounter at the Met was her classic and unassuming outfit: all white everything with a splash of pink in the foot area.  Meagan is a fashion illustrator based in NYC and working on a line of illustrated scarves and handbags. She likes macarons and her tiny West Village apartment. Check out some of her illustrations here. (photos by Xavier Aaronson)

Amanda Marie Burmaster Met Museum Xavier Aaronson Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Amanda was spotted in a motionless gaze in front of Tiepolo’s 220 x 128 behemoth of a painting: ”The Triumph of Marius.” After snapping her out of her daze, Amanda was kind enough to let us take a few photos of her in full style mode. Hard to believe, but this was indeed a chance encounter. We later found out that Amanda spends a lot of time at the Met because she’s doing research for a novel she’s writing that’s set in the basement of the Met. So if you see her at the museum one day, make sure to wish her luck on her novel. (photo by Xavier Aaronson)

Sofia Ivarsson Arken Museum Self Shooter Jesper Rasmussen
This is how I picture the lighting inside of a Scandinavian museum during the darker months of winter.  Of course I’m completely wrong and this is just a nifty filter on Instagram or something but still, bleak and sexy is how I imagine it. Sofia is Swedish – from Malmö, more specifically. She’s studying scenography (which I didn’t know existed until today) and to make ends meet, she spends her weekends working the ticket counter at the Arken Museum of Modern Art, which is located just south of Copenhagen. Sofia’s perfected the slender, all-black-everything steeze and even throws in an unconscious splash of cardiac red from her staff pass. When you’re gawking tapers off, check out the photos by Jesper Rasmussen in the background.

Hannah is German and came to visit the Whitney Museum’s Biennial exhibit before skipping town for a hiking trip in Maine. Outdoorsy, culturally attuned and underratedly beautiful. What else are you looking for in a babe? Here she is spotted in front of Andrew Massulo‘s collection of oil paintings. (photo by Xavier Aaronson)
